With the readjustment in the price of diesel, the federal government is discussing including in the PEC of Fuels a kind of aid for drivers and truck drivers.

In the vote on the bill passed last week, which established a 17% ceiling on ICMS, one of the highlights included the creation of a benefit of up to R$300 for transport categories.

The initiative, which prioritized beneficiaries of Auxílio Brasil, did not, however, have enough votes in the Federal Senate. Now, faced with the new scenario, the federal government is considering making another attempt.

The amendment was presented by Senator Eduardo Braga (MDB-AM) and provided for a fiscal impact of R$ 3 billion. The idea is that the benefit will be monthly and paid until the end of the year for autonomous drivers of individual transport, including taxi and apps.

With the new increase in diesel, government advisors argue that self-employed truck drivers should also be included, which could raise the tax impact to R$4.5 billion.

The project, according to reports made to CNN, would have already received the green light from the economic team, according to which the measure would be within the fiscal ceiling.

The reading of the current scenario, made by government advisors, is that an increase in diesel during the electoral campaign can encourage strike movements, causing damage to the Brazilian economy. The payment of aid to truck drivers has been seen as “cheap insurance” to protect economic activity in the country, despite the recognition that the measure would only be a relief to self-employed truck drivers, without fully covering fuel inflation. .

The Planalto Palace, however, still has doubts as to whether the granting of the benefit could be made unfeasible because of the Elections Law.

The Fuels PEC, which should be analyzed by the Federal Senate next week, proposes a counterpart to the federation units that zero the ICMS for diesel and gas.
